History of the Papago

handbook of north american indians. southwest10 • Published In 1983 • Pages: 137-148

By: Fontana, Bernard L..

Abstract
This work is primarily a summary of Papago historical events covering the Spanish period of 1687-1821, the Mexican period of 1821-1848, and the American period of from 1848 to approximately 1981. Much of the data centers around the Papago relations with other non-Indian groups (e. g., governments), missionization, effects of acculturation, and the reservation period. In addition to the above, the document also contains some limited information on education, the economy, and the socio-political development of the tribe in the late twentieth century.
