This source is an historical reconstruction of Mescalero band organization and leadership during the mid-nineteenth century. The author's orientation is functional and he concludes that 'The institution of leadership preserved the options of the individual at the same time that it fostered the processes that maintained a structure of autonomous political segments' (p. 104).
