The resource holding corporation among the Mescalero Apache

By: Basehart, Harry W..

Abstract
This article, based on memory ethnography and historical documents, presents the argument that the Mescalero in the 1850s may be conceptualized as a 'resource holding corporation.' According to Basehart, access to resources within the Mescalero territory was equally open to all members of the Mescalero group, or tribe; property rights did not inhere in individuals or bands. In presenting his argument, Basehart provides information on subsistence patterns, social groups, and group mobility and flexibility.
