Abstract
This study examines Mormon self-government and Mormon-Gentile relations. Mormon leaders believed in building a temporal, political Kingdom of God prior to the Second Coming that will establish the apocalyptic and eternal Kingdom of God. State-building ran them afoul of local and federal governments, and of the general populace. In 1890 the Mormon government made peace with the United States government, clearing the way for acceptance of Utah as a state. For references cited see Hill and Allen (1972 “Selected bibliography”).
