Abstract
first part discusses settlement patterns and their origin in a design for the City of Zion drawn up by early Mormon leaders. The second part presents case studies of six villages, three in Utah and three in Canada. Each village sketch contains settlement history, land use patterns, and a variety of sociological data (e.g., on housing, population trends, social institutions, material style of life, occupational specialization, education, etc.) drawn from the author's community surveys.
