Abstract
In the summer of 1954, a survey was made at the Fort Apache Indian Reservation to determine the incidence of congenital hip dislocation, and to investigate whether or not separate breeding populations existed on the reservation. In the process of investigation, anthropometric information was collected on height, weight, head and face breadth on 626 subjects ranging in age from 1-65. These data were further broken down by affiliation with each of the three endogamous bands existing on the reservation (the breeding population), and additional inter-band comparisons made. The adult Apache data were then compared with samples from Negroid (Congo Baamba), Caucasoid (Irish) and other Mongoloid and Southwestern Indian populations. In addition, four of the anthropometric dimensions were plotted for both boys and girls from ages 1-19 and compared with similar data derived from Black and White samples in the age group 6-14 (p. 235). In the analysis of the results of this investigation, it was found that while differences did exist in serological gene frequencies between the three bands, the analysis of variances and means of the data failed to reflect these differences anthropometrically. The five measurements listed above did show differences when applied to Apache, Congo Negro, and Irish, but failed to distinguish biological affinities within a single, so-called racial stock (Mongoloid).
