Abstract
This article discusses socioeconomic transformations that occurred among the Ute Indians in the 1950s after the group recieved a seventeen million dollar award by the U.S. Courts of Claims. Some of this money was distributed to members in per capita payment, while a significant part of it was allocated for financing development projects that promised to benefit the whole group. The article explores how different members of Ute soceity used this money and sought to benefit from projects.
