Abstract

This is an enlightening article by a missionary who has devoted the majority of his near eighty years to the study of the Navajo. Father Berard goes a long way toward clarifying the complex problem of the Navajo concept of anthropomorphism, the soul within the gods (the 'inner god'), the relation of the soul with the human body, kinds of souls that survive after death, and death itself. This is required reading for anyone interested in Navajo religious and moral beliefs as well as their attitude toward nature. Information on Father Berard's principal informant, called d.n. in this article, may be found in category 115. A 'Key' to the Navajo alphabet, pages 62-64, has been omitted.
