Abstract
The material for this article comprises chapter 35 of Powers' TRIBES OF CALIFORNIA, and is, in general, a relatively brief ethnographic sketch of Yokuts culture as it existed in the 1870's. The author was a professional journalist, although one of the most outstanding authorities on the California Indians of his time. Some aspects of Yokuts culture given special attention by the author are: chieftainship; Yokuts prophets and magicians; weapons; foods; gambling; medical practices; disposal of the dead; and ceremonials, particularly the cyclic mourning ceremonies for the dead.
