Abstract
In this dissertation Theodoratus presents a study in culture change relevant to the Manchester Band and Point Arena Pomo located in the central region of California. The groups are examined in terms of the extent of external influences (mostly Euro-American) on traditional Pomo life. The data gathered from this examination are summarized in terms of four topics which characterize some processes of social change: the socially disruptive factors of change on work patterns, the system of social control, the change in family stucture as the result of culture contact, and the consistent struggles of the Pomo since contact times to maintain group identity. In addition to the above the author reconstructs the history of the Manchester Band by means of early reports and ethnographies. The above data are further supplemented by descriptions of the present day situation obtained through field observations and inquiries into the past with band members during parts of 1966, 1967, and 1968 (p. 2). Appendix 1, pp. 324-374, presents a culture summary of pre-contact Manchester Band ethnography.
