Abstract
This is an account of the sequence of historical events that took place prior to the removal of the Eastern Cherokee to Indian Territory in Oklahoma in 1838. Much of the discussion centers around the relationship of the United States government and the Cherokee people, and the government's determination to send them to the west. Interesting infomation is also presented here on how and why certain bands of Cherokees remained behind in North Carolina following the general removal of the population.
