Abstract
This article centers around the concept of sex and gender in Cherokee society. Gender roles, especially in reference to women, are discussed in this study in terms of the life cycle, social groups, economics, parental and caretaker roles, leadership, religion, leisure, recreation, and the arts, sexuality, courtship and marriage, and husband and wife relationships. A final section of this work describes the specific changes that have taken place in attitudes, beliefs, and practices regarding gender roles from the eighteenth to the late twentieth centuries.
