Abstract
This document is a brief history of Cherokee fall festivals and fairs from early times to 1978. Accounts of aboriginal fall festivals are taken from historical sources. These early festivals are briefly described before the author turns her attention to the central topic of the document: a history of Cherokee Indian fairs from about 1914 to 1978. The events of each year's fair are described, except for the years in which no fair was held. Actual pages from fair programs are included. Extensive lists of exhibits and prizes are provided. Exhibits at the fairs include: fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, confections and desserts, preserves, arts and crafts (including basketry and pottery), clothing, and flowers and plants. Spectacles and contests described include air plane rides, beauty pageants, baby contests, sporting events (including a description of the game of Indian Ball), and dancing and music competitions. At the end of the work is appended a copy of the 85 characters of the Cherokee syllabary, along with phonetic descriptions of them.
