Introduction: the struggle to be separate

amish struggle with modernityHanover, Nh • Published In 1994 • Pages: ix, 1-17, 261-263

By: Kraybill, Donald B..

Abstract
In this article, Kraybill offers an overview of Amish society. From their origins as dissident Anabaptists in sixteenth century Europe to their present status as a religious minority in North American society, the Amish have struggled to maintain a distinctive subculture. After charting key features of Amish life and social organization, the author shows how the decline of farming and emergent conflict with the state have brought significant changes in recent years to the Amish struggle to remain a separate people (p. 1).
