Abstract
This document is a detailed study of socialization and education among the Old Order Amish. The study is framed by a consideration of the major cultural themes in Old Order Amish society, the goals of the education and socialization of children and young people among the Old Order Amish and the intersection of the two. Specifically, the authors examine school organization and administration, curriculum and educational theory and method in elementary and vocational schools, teacher qualifications and teacher-student and teacher-community relations. In addition, on the basis of a variety of testing procedures, the authors present conclusions on the personality, vocational aspirations and academic achievement of Old Order Amish children. Two other topics that receive considerable treatment in this document are the relationship between Old Order Amish schools and non-Amish public school systems and the role of the Amish school as a point of both cultural contact and separation. The authors conclude with a discussion of the lessons of Old Order Amish education for schooling in American society in general.
