Abstract
This work is a study of Iowa's contemporary Old Order Amish based on data gathered in the Kalona, Buchanan County and Milton Old Order Amish communities. Specifically, religious practices, economic organization, family life, patterns of mobility and organized resettlement and education among the Iowa Old Order Amish are examined. A chapter devoted entirely to the Buchanan school controversy also provides useful information on Old Order interaction with the non-Amish world and on non-Amish attitudes towards the 'Plain People'. In addition, the Old World and New World history of the Amish is related, along with a discussion of the origins of the Old Order Amish and their migration to and settlement in Iowa. Also included are a brief discussion of the distribution and character of Old Order Amish and Mennonite communities in the Midwestern states and an assessment of the future of the Old Order Amish in Iowa and elsewhere in the United States. The numerous footnotes throughout the text are primarily bibliographical in nature with occasional references to interviews from which data were obtained for this document. This information will be found in Information Sources Listed In Other Works (113), pp. 169-177, at the end of the text.
