Abstract
This article describes the various contexts in which English and Spanish are used in Miami, as well as the similarities and differences in linguistic usage between Cubans who were born in the United States or arrived at an early age, and those who came as adults. This study shows that Spanish fulfills important public functions and that certain public domains, such as employment, do not discourage the maintenance of Spanish. At the same time, a considerable intergenerational shift toward English may be observed (p. 49).
