Immigrant economic adjustment and family organization: the Cuban success story reexamined

International migration review20 (1) • Published In 1986 • Pages: 1-20

By: Pérez, Lisandro.

Abstract
This article proposes an explanation of immigrant economic adjustment that rests on a household level approach. The data analyzed and presented here shows that the relative economic success of Cuban Americans cannot be fully understood without taking into consideration the economic organization of the Cuban family, an organization that facilitates upward social mobility (p. 8). Comparisons are made in the text between Cuban American income and characteristics of the labor force with those of other Hispanics and the population of the United States as a whole. This paper also points out the significant role of the elderly in contributing to Cuban family income.
