Abstract
This work focuses on the immigration and adaptation experiences of the first three waves of the post-revolutionary Cuban migrations primarily to the south Florida area of the United States during the years 1959-1962, 1965-1973, and 1980. This document provides not only a history of the post-1959 Cuban emigré community in Florida, but also examines the cultural, political, and intellectual life of this community. The study is divided into two major parts. Part 1 provides a detailed history of the actual migrations themselves following the Cuban revolution in 1959. Part 2 of the book explores larger conceptual issues such as those involved with assimilation into American society, the maintenance of national identity balanced off with the desire to participate more fully in the host society, and the quuestion of what it means to be an American. This section also contains information on various exile organizations, the news media, religion, education, exile politics, and the intellectual and creative life of the emigré community.
