Abstract
This document discusses the major social economic, political, and geographical topics relating to Cuban settlement and culture in the United States, with a particular focus on the Miami and Union City - West New York, New Jersey areas. The authors discuss Cuban Americans as an ethnic minority and those events and people which have helped shape the popular image held by others of these people. As background to the study Boswell and Curtis present an historical overview of conditions in Cuba which were largely instrumental in encouraging Cuban emigration to the United States (see category 170). Other topics discussed at length in the text are: distributional and residential patterns, growth and impact of Cuban settlements in Miami, the demographic characteristics of Cuban Americans, language and religious patterns, artistic expression, cuisine and food-ways, politics and ideology, the family, youth, and processes of acculturation and assimilation (p. xi).
