Abstract
This study presents a critical examination of community organization of the Chinese in the real but fictitiously named settlement of 'Valley City', California, and attempts to show how it emerged from experiences in the past. Weiss's data center on organizational and institutional adjustments to social and cultural change. The document is divided into three parts: the era of the traditional Chinatown, covering the period of 1850-1900; the time of transition, from 1900-1940; and the community from 1940-1970. A major portion of this work deals with Chinese American social organization, particularly in reference to the various Chinese associations, with acculturation and assimilation processes, and with socio-cultural and economic trends in the Chinese American community.
