Abstract
This is a descriptive analysis of the situation faced by Chinese Americans '…in terms of contact and conflict between two vastly different ways of life: how Chinese and White Americans conduct themselves under the circumstances; the effect of such contact and conflict on the behavior pattern of the individual; and what future course Chinese-Americans and White Americans should pursue in mutual accommodations for a brighter and happier America of tomorrow' (p. viii). Some of the topics discussed are the Chinese language, family and kinship, religion, friendship and hospitality, adolescence, and prejudice. The reader should be aware that in this study there are frequent unannounced switches in focus from the Chinese Americans to the Chinese of mainland China and Taiwan, that, when coupled with the author's sometimes speculative and often philosophical discussion of his data, make the interpretation of the cultural information on the Chinese Americans alone, difficult.
