The racialization of Puerto Rican identity in the United States

ethnicity, race and nationality in the caribbeanSan Juan, P. R. • Published In 1997 • Pages: 233-273

By: Rodríguez, Víctor M..

Abstract
Rodríguez discusses Puerto Rican identity and ethnicity in history, both in Puerto Rico and in the United States. He argues that the identity of Puerto Ricans living in Puerto Rico is based on culture. When the United States took over Puerto Rico and later in the post World War II period when immigrants arrived to the United States, Puerto Ricans were subjected to a bi-polar racial classification system that redefined their identity in terms of race and divided Puerto Ricans based on their color.
