Abstract
Bernardo Vega's memoirs are a unique and sometimes humorous first-hand account of the author's life as an immigrant during the first half of the twentieth century. The memoirs also present data on the activities and concerns of the Puerto Rican community in the city during that period. In addition to the autobiographical information contained in this document this work also discusses the many difficulties faced by the immigrants in adjusting to New York City life, their growing involvement in political parties, labor organizations and socialist movements, and their cultural life. The author also includes his recollections of his uncle, providing a glimpse of New York City Puerto Rican life in the late nineteenth century, at the time of the Puerto Rican and Cuban wars of independence against Spain.
