Abstract
Based largely on interviews and supplemented by various documents and personal observations of the author, this work provides a detailed study of Puerto Rican migrations to New York City during the first half of the twentieth century. The text describes the migrants and the reasons why they came to the mainland, how they compare as a group to their compatriots at home, and what their journey to the mainland meant in terms of occupational change and income. Much of the information in this document, however, deals with the many complex problems involved in Puerto Rican assimilation into American society and aspirations.
