Abstract
This short work is based on archival research and the author’s encounter and interviews with members of a Haida trading group that had come to Port Townsend, Washington. It includes discussion of artifacts and design motifs (including drawings of tattoos) now part of the Smithsonian collection, and an account of early contact with the Haida.
