Haida since 1960

handbook of north american indians. northwest7 • Published In 1990 • Pages: 261-266

By: Stearns, Mary Lee.

Abstract
This document provides a brief account of Haida life after 1960 in the communities of Masset and Skidegate in British Columbia, and Hydaburg in Alaska. The author compares the communities and the changes that have occurred in them. Elements of the feasting and rank system persisted in the communities, but in a shadow form no longer as relevant to modern employment and ways of life. The 1970s saw a revival of traditional culture, especially in the arts, and in the 1980s movements organized around land-claims issues and resource exploitation.
