Abstract
This work is a comprehensive study of adolescent development in the central Canadian Arctic, with a particular focus on the Inuit community of Holman Island. After presenting brief introductory data on his methodology, the geography of the region, and the community structure of the Inuit on Holman Island, Condon turns his full attention to a analysis of the status and position of the adolescent in Copper Inuit society. Starting with the various life stages and cycles through which they pass, the author describes the seasonal cycle of events which affect adolescents (e.g., hunting, fishing, traveling, etc.), their family relationships, friends, peer groups, sexual behavior, mate selection, school work, and aspirations. The work concludes with a discussion on adolescent rebellion and deviance in Inuit society.
