Abstract
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the nature, types, and extent of Russian influence on Tlingit acculturation. In this investigation Rathburn focuses primarily on the period prior to 1900 and the acculturative role of the Russian American Company and the Russian Orthodox Church. Rathburn finds that the Russian-Tlingit contact was highly localized, but that the impact of the Russian traders and missionaries was nonetheless significant because their influence quickly spread outward from the points of direct contact.
