Abstract
Jones was a missionary and lived among the Tlingits for over twenty years. This study is a record of his personal observations. It is a descriptive and narrative account, and often superficial. However, it has the merit of attempting a systematic report on the Tlingit culture before much serious anthropological work had been done. The book contains information on physical environment, demography, kinship system and kin groups, settlements and community structure, clothes and ornaments, diet, economic activities, arts and amusements, marriage, family life, childbirth, diseases and death, shamanism, totemism, personal traits, legal and social norms, missionary activities and acculturation.
