Abstract
This paper provides a demonstration and discussion of patterns of ethnic identity assertion in second and third generation Serbian Americans living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 'The 'episodic qualities' … of Serbian-American ethnicity are described at two levels of analysis: 1) an individual mode of ethnic identity assertion, following stages in the life cycle, and 2) a group mode of assertion following stages of an annual cycle of religious holidays' (p. 55). Several brief case histories are presented in the text illustrating the various ways in which individuals tactically employ ethnic identity. Padgett concludes that '…the description and analysis of patterns of ethnic identity assertion lend valuable data-based support to the situational approach to ethnicity' (p. 55).
