Abstract
Based on the results of an extensive mail questionnaire, in-depth interviews, and participant observation in communal gatherings, this work presents an analysis of the individual and collective struggles of Armenian-Americans to preserve their cultural legacy while at the same time actively seeking new directions in attaining the 'American Dream' (dust jacket). This book describes how Armenians become distanced from their ethnic origins with the passing of each new generation, and how the ascribed, unconscious, compulsive ethnicity or Armenianness of the immigrant generation is gradually transformed into a voluntary, rational, situational ethnicity with time. Although the document deals extensively with problems of assimilation and identity, there is also much information here on the Armenian church, political parties, the Armenian-American community, language, and intermarriage.
