Abstract
Although a major portion of this work consists of a photographic essay dealing with the various Hasidic groups in the eastern United States (e.g.,Lubavitch, Satmar, and Bobover), the introductory text by Arthur A. Cohen entitled 'An Essay in Praise of Hasidim' (pp. 13-32), provides an excellent survey of the cultural history of the Hasidim, and some of the basic theological constructs of their religion. Cohen describes the origins of the Hasidic movement in Europe, the rise of modern Hasidim, its teachings, practices, and philosophy, and the development of the movement in the United States. The photographs taken by Garvin in 1967-1970, depict a full year's worth of Hasidic life '…including all the holy days, the life of the winter and the summer, the schools and camps, the businesses and the vacation places' (p. 10).
