Chassidic recruitment and the local context

Urban anthropology • Published In 1978 • Pages: 373-383

By: Singer, Merrill.

Abstract
Recent studies in urban anthropology recognize the increasing importance of contextual reference in research. In another paper Mitchell and Plotnicov explored the relationship between Lubavitcher Hasidic proselytizing in Pittsburgh and a broad range of cultural, geographic, and temporal contexts. In this article Singer focuses on the Los Angeles, California branch of the Lubavitcher movement, and attempts to demonstrate how important just one of those contexts can be with regard to Hasidic behavior and community response (p. 373).
