Abstract
This is a study on the impact of ethnicity on health behavior and health outcomes, specifically breast cancer screening among Italian-American women living in Brooklyn, New York. Other studies report a disproportionately high number of invasive cancers in areas with high concentrations of Italian-American women. One study revealed that Italian-American women tend to wait until they feel the disease before they act. Krause did her own study analyzing a survey of 109 women with Italian surnames who visited a breast cancer screening van for three days in Brooklyn. She found that two-thirds of the women were there for the first time, over half of whom were over 50 years old. She concludes that social support in the neighborhood and family history were two major variables favoring positive health behavior.
