Abstract
This is an article on Italian stereotypes: How Italian-American perceive themselves and are perceived by others; also, the relationship between these perceptions, and how these perceptions change over time. The article is mostly an erudite discussion of theory and entails the analysis of only a few interviews, which Schellenbaum, an Italian national, carried out over two summers of field work in the San Francisco and Bay Area, California.
