Abstract
The St. Peter's fiesta is celebrated annually by the Italian (mostly Sicilian) American community of Gloucester, Massachusetts. This work focuses on the fiesta that took place on June 25-28 in 1970 in which Swiderski acted as a participant observer. The author describes in detail the following events: the initial preparations for the fiesta, various religious aspects (e.g., masses, processions, and the blessing of the fleet), and associated secular activities such as parades, carnivals, sein-boat races, and greasy pole contests. The study concludes with a brief description of changes that have taken place in the fiesta from 1970 to 1985.
