Abstract
This is a first-hand account of Italian Americans in an inner city neighborhood in Boston's west end. The document is systematic and sensitive in the analysis of working class culture, and of the politicians, planners and other outside professionals who affected it. In the text "…Gans compares West Enders to Americans of different classes, races, and ethnic groups and tells what happened when the area fell victim to the bulldozer. In the process, he raises crucial questions about the nature of the family and peer group, community and urbanism, policy and progress in modern America. Gans rejects the conventional wisdom about ethnic culture, slums, and urban renewal " (overleaf).
