Abstract
This paper represents a preliminary investigation '…into the emerging political activism of the Italian members of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union in New York City prior to the economic collapse of 1929' (p. 77). Particular attention is given to the role of Italians in the ILGWU'S so called 'civil war', a period of intense struggle within the union during the 1920s. Zappia describes the organization of Italian workers into two important language locals and their participation in the intra-union conflict between the communist and 'right wing' socialists culminating in the Special Convention of 1925. This Special Convention served as the battleground for the power struggle within the ILGWU.
