Abstract
This study examines several problems that have arisen as the result of Indochinese (primarily Hmong) resettlement in the Phillips and Elliot Park neighborhoods of Minneapolis. At the request of the mayor, who was concerned with the potential negative impact of several rumors regarding the presence of Indochinese settlers in the two communities, the author undertook the job of examining the rumors. These rumors involved the fear of other minority groups that the Hmong would take away jobs andhousing in the area, that they would use their supposed knowledge of the martial arts to intimidate their neighbors, and that they would receive preferential treatment in the schools and in public health care facilities. Using a combination of interviews and data from various organizations, Calderon was able to refute in large part the general allegations of these rumors.
