Abstract
This book provides a vivid portrait of daily life and popular opinion in a low-income barrio of Chicanos living in Laredo, Texas, a predominantly Mexican-American city located on the U.S. - Mexican border. Through the use of questionnaires, the author gathered information on a wide variety of issues concerning Chicano, but concluded that such a procedure is not the best method for ethnographers. Her material on the life histories of key informants, patterns of commerce and domestic consumption, religion, and employment are used to question theories of 'the culture of poverty.'
