Abstract
This article is a chapter from the book, "Studies in Turkish Local Government." It focuses on an experimental village and its associated research institute, the Hasanoğlan Village Institute (see also document no. 6.) Founded in 1941, the objective of the Institute is to train teachers for village schools. The teachers themselves are selected from rural areas, the idea being that they have a better sense of how best to teach rural children. The long-term objective of the Institute is to raise the economic and cultural standards of rural areas by encouraging peasants to improve village water supply, sanitation, roads, housing, and farming methods.
