The Caribs of the Lesser Antilles
Aborigines of the West Indies • 9 • Published In 1895 • Pages: 295-313
By: Ober, Frederick A. (Frederick Albion).
Abstract
The author, a traveler and naturalist, gives a brief history of contacts between the Carib people and Europeans, a culture summary in the form of statements quoted from various earlier writers, and a description of petroglyphs and archaeological discoveries followed by a reconstruction of pre-Columbian history of the Caribs based on comparative evidence. Some of Ober's statements have been questioned by Modern experts on the Island Caribs. They are of interest, however, because of the scarcity of first-hand late nineteenth century accounts of the Island Carib.
