The Aztecs: the history of the Indies of New Spain

Abstract
This comprehensive history of the Aztecs from the native perspective is an English "adaptation" of the Spanish text by a sympathetic mid-sixteenth century Dominican friar who spoke Nahuatl and employed numerous informants who could interpret and elaborate upon surviving pre-Hispanic codices. Beginning with mythic origins in Aztlan and the journey to Tenochtitlan, it proceeds with increasing detail through the reign of each sovereign, concluding with a rather brief account of the Spanish conquest. Most illustrations are taken from earlier Colonial period codices rather than the original work.
