Language, education and social processes in a Gaelic community

Routledge & Kegan PaulLondon • Published In 1977 • Pages: 12, 222

By: MacKinnon, Kenneth.

Abstract
This monograph, an abridgement of MacKinnon's doctoral dissertation, is an intensive study of the maintenance of the Gaelic language on the Isle of Harris. MacKinnon examines the vitality of Gaelic on the island, focusing on the respective role and functions of Gaelic and English in community life, in the educational system, and in the sphere of religion. MacKinnon also includes data on attitudes toward Gaelic, which indicate that age, sex, and occupational category all may influence notions about language and its proper role in the Harris community.
