Abstract
This paper is a survey of Greek rural-urban migration patterns from the mid nineteenth century to approximately 1971. After a review of some of the existing anthropological literature on the subject and a brief history of the modern Greek state, the author discusses motivation for the moves, decisions as to location in the urban areas, the processes of their long term settlement there, and their continuing relationshp with their rural area of origin. Finally an analysis is made of the various changes engendered by these migrant activites in the system that spawned migration in the first place (p. 227).
