Introducing the NIKOKYRA: ideality and reality in social process

gender & power in rural greecePrinceton, N.J. • Published In 1986 • Pages: 97-120

By: Salamone, Stephen D., Stanton, J. B..

Abstract
In this paper Salamone and Stanton discuss the formalization of women's power and prestige in rural Greek society through the institution of the NIKOKYRIO, translated as 'household economy' in the text. The NIKOKYRIO, which forms the organizational focus of the nuclear family, is a corporate, self-sufficient, family-based enterprise from which both men and women derive public prestige and social equality. The authors describe in detail the functioning of NIKOKYRIO on the island of Amouliani and the manner in which this traditional concept has adapted to modernization and industrialization.
