Abstract
This paper, which deals with the Cycladic Island of Nisos, describes the manner in which the pattern of naming, the system of inheritance, and beliefs about the fate of the soul after death, relate to the values placed on the independence and self-sufficiency of the family and on the moral obligations of parents, children and ritual kinsmen (KOUMBARI). Comparisons of these data are made to the Sarakatsani shepherds and the villagers of Vasilika.
