Abstract
In this study, Hirschon examines a poverty-stricken urban refugee settlement in the port city of Pireaus and how it maintained its rural traditions over a 50-year period. The traditions include arranged marriages, dowry, and uxorilocal postmarital residence. Traditional values emphasize permanent marital bonds and family stability, which are based on separate living quarters within the bride's family home that are provided as part of the dowry. Hirschon discusses the extended family relationships in the house, including those between mother and daughter, husband and wife, sisters, and brother-in-laws. The relationships between sisters are often strained, however, those between brother-in-laws are in general friendly.
