Within and without: the category of 'female' in the ethnography of modern Greece

gender & power in rural greecePrinceton, N.J. • Published In 1986 • Pages: 215-233

By: Herzfeld, Michael.

Abstract
In this paper Herzfeld discusses some of the problems inherent in the study of gender ideology in Greek society. He notes that the concepts of 'female' and 'male' are symbolic categories which are manipulable and labile and are terms used by both villagers and nationalist writers alike to express ideas about what it means to be a Greek man or woman. The author suggests that '…we can counter the charges of both excessive generalization and excessive particularism by situating the uses of gender symbolism and ideology in an appropriate historical setting -- the experience of national identity at both the national and local levels' (p. 216).
